TurboPatent is a Seattle-based tech company that aims to reinvent the patent application process by leveraging its automation and artificial intelligence technology.
I interned at TurboPatent as a UX Designer to redesign Invention Hub, an invention discovery platform. In the meanwhile, I also found an opportunity to create
a new onboarding experience for first-time users.
The onboarding experience is to help users draft their first idea easily and smoothly and reduce in-person training. During one-week design and implementation, the prototype received positive testers' reviews.
The Sales team is committed to providing the best onboarding experience by scheduling a one-hour meeting with customers to help them draft the first idea on Invention Hub. To save time for users to get onboard on the app, the team is seeking a more seamless experience.
Before the design and implementation, I conducted a meeting with the stakeholder to understand the user needs and business expectations. Key user insight I obtained is the most of the first-time users on Invention Hub have:
Due to the time constraints, I was assigned to focus on designing the storyboard and prototype and gathering feedback from test users for future implementation. Regarding the storyboard, I sketched out the blueprint of the onboarding experience with content and assets required for each screen. This document ensures all team members are on the same page and also me to communicate with the stakeholders easily before getting into prototyping.
Getting feedback from testers helps me validate if the onboarding design meets users' needs and further iterate design based on user insights. The final design gained positive feedback.
